We are currently probably experiencing the greatest advances in the way we process information in human history.
While these advances are taking over more and more parts of our world, it seems one large segment has continuously been missing out all the fun.
As everyone is talking about IoT, virtualization, Big Data, Fast Data, and Machine Learning, the manufacturing industry has seemed to been stuck in a closed-source proprietary world. Relying on Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) communicating in large sets of incompatible protocols has made it difficult to create applications that integrate these systems with the new world. Having a closed market has always been bad for technological evolution. While there have been several approaches to creating gateways and bridges between the technologies, these are usually expensive hardware and/or software solutions that don’t provide the level of integration we are looking for.
Most open-source libraries for accessing PLCs usually lack great parts of functionality and/or are licensed in a way that it is impossible to use them for building commercial applications. So why not create a set of libraries that allow unified access to PLCs using a wide range of protocols?
Our last meetup before X-mas is the perfect occasion to think big and to think Open Source: Christofer Dutz will present a new vision for the Industrial Internet that goes beyond the borders of single manufacturers and industries.
About the speaker: Christofer Dutz (Senior IT Consultant, codecentric) likes to swim outside the mainstream. He is really passionate about walking new paths. Some times this means making a new technology useable for the masses or by creating new combinations of established strategies. His solutions are usually unconventional but simple, highly efficient and sexy.
