Is Spring Boot Becoming Obsolete?

In March 2026, we kicked off a modernization project for a client. Spring Boot was an obvious choice. There was a strategic decision behind it. There was existing know-how. There was existing infrastructure. The team was set. The work began.

One of the colleagues, however, came in with an unusual starting point. He had barely any prior contact with Java. He had never worked with Spring (Boot).

In the past, that would have been a serious problem. I would have said it wouldn't have worked. A ramp-up over several weeks would have been necessary. Maybe a mentor to carry him through the first sprints. His first features would have been slow to come.

Instead, something different happened. With an AI assistant at his side, he started delivering immediately.

That got me thinking. Someone without a Java background was delivering productive code in a Spring Boot project within days. Does that have consequences?

Is Spring Boot becoming obsolete?

No

Of course Spring Boot isn't becoming obsolete. It's an excellent framework. It's actively developed. Countless applications run on it in production.

What is changing is how framework knowledge is distributed across the team. Until now, practically every developer had to master the stack in detail. Anyone who wanted to design also had to be able to build. That coupling is loosening more and more. Depth is still needed. But it's shifting upwards. Setting the frame becomes more important. Pure implementation is increasingly handed off to the AI. Concretely, that work moves into the harness. That's where we codify what good architecture and quality mean for us. The code beneath is written by the AI.

Harness Engineering: Our Safety Net

We are experienced senior engineers with years of practice and a trained eye for the typical pitfalls. From day one, we built a tight safety net. ArchUnit rules cause architecture violations to fail the build. A comprehensive test suite runs alongside. Static code analysis catches code smells and typical error patterns. Security scans warn us about vulnerable dependencies and code weaknesses. Observability requirements make every deviation in production visible.

None of this only runs in CI. It is available directly to the AI assistant during development as feedback. That way, the AI sees every violation immediately. It reacts to it. It does it right.

That's exactly why the colleague could deliver from the start. Not because he had become an expert overnight. But because the AI could deliver code under the protection of the net.

AI assistants are stochastic. They hallucinate. Always. Some hallucinations happen to align with reality, others don't. That's why we fundamentally distrust their output. Our safety net is built so that the good ideas get through. The rest gets caught before it becomes expensive. This is exactly where the line runs between "AI assistance works" and "doesn't work": AI shines where we can verify automatically.

The Shift: What Has Changed

That covers what the harness does. The remaining question is what this does to us. To those of us who, until now, wrote every line of code ourselves.

Until now, our main work was at the keyboard. Mastering frameworks in detail. Picking the right APIs out of hundreds and bringing them together cleanly. Setting up a configuration that holds up under load. Whoever could do that quickly and cleanly was valuable. It was a craft. Mastering this craft was a viable career path, often for years.

That work is now being taken over by the AI. It is increasingly writing the code.

So what's left for us?

Architecture. Where do we draw the boundaries between components? What data flows should the system have? What contracts between modules? Which persistence approach? Which communication style? The AI helps here too. It sketches variants. It compares patterns. It surfaces edge cases you've overlooked. But the decision about which architecture is viable, it doesn't make. That stays with you. It is irreversibly expensive when it goes wrong. And it requires a mental model of how systems behave under load. Experience that you cannot pull from documentation.

Product. What is the system actually supposed to do? What problem does it solve, and for whom? What does the customer say they need? What do they really need? Where is the difference? This is the level on which software succeeds or fails. Here, too, the AI helps. It plays through options. It structures requirements. It uncovers blind spots. But it doesn't make the decision. Which problem is the right one — that stays with you. At the table with the customer. Asking. Judging.

Platform and Harness. Within which guardrails should the AI work? Which architectural rules do we make machine-enforceable? Which tests are the minimum? Which thresholds for performance, security, and coverage do we set? This level didn't exist in this form before. Today it determines whether AI assistance works in a team. Or whether it quietly causes damage in the background.

Judgment. This skill runs across all three levels. You have to have a feel for the AI's limits and weaknesses. Two patterns are especially important. First: its output looks better than it is. Code that compiles, keeps tests green, and still falls over under load. Second: it is agreeable by nature. It rarely pushes back where it should. Anyone who fails to see both will be lulled into a false sense of security by plausible-looking output.

Where Depth Must Be Concentrated

That leaves the question of where depth is needed. Three areas come to mind concretely. They are the points where the safety net itself is built or torn.

Taking responsibility. AI can advise. It cannot take responsibility. For decisions that cannot be undone, a plausible recommendation is not enough. You need someone who really understands and can contextualize it. Outage, security incident, data-critical migration. In moments like these, you need depth in the stack. You delete data. You trigger a failover. You hot-roll a patch. Chasing the AI is not enough there.

Building the harness. A safety net is only as good as the knowledge of the pitfalls it's meant to catch. Anyone who doesn't know the stack cannot anticipate what will go wrong. And a harness that doesn't cover the important pitfalls is more dangerous than no harness at all. It suggests safety where there is none. Formulating ArchUnit rules, setting up the test strategy, calibrating thresholds. That's only possible with depth in the respective framework.

Where verification reaches its limit. Not everything can be checked automatically. Some failure patterns only show up under production load. Others only in rare timing situations. Still others look plausible. No test recognizes them as bugs. A race condition, for example. In a thousand test runs it stays invisible. In production it occurs reliably. Tests green, code broken. Where the harness doesn't reach, you need someone who can read the stack top-to-bottom. Not someone who can prompt well.

For the individual developer, the sweet spot shifts. They don't need to know every annotation. But they must be able to verify whether the AI's solution is correct. And they have to recognize when they're hitting the limits of their harness.

Fundamental understanding beats API knowledge. "How does the internet work?" is the more important question than "How do I configure a Spring Boot security filter chain?" The first gives you a mental model that carries every web technology. The second the AI can look up for you in seconds.

Not a Eulogy, but an Upgrade

My colleague from the beginning of this piece keeps delivering. Without a Spring Boot background. With AI support. Under the protection of a harness that someone else built with depth. This works not because framework knowledge has suddenly become irrelevant. It works because the distribution of that knowledge has changed. Some build the harness in which AI speed becomes safe in the first place. Others work with AI support inside it. They deliver faster than we would have thought possible just two years ago.

Teams will become smaller and differently composed as a result. One or two with depth in the stack. The rest more broadly positioned. Anyone who spends less time on framework friction gains time. Time for the question of what the system is actually supposed to do. Closer to the product, in other words. And for the individual, the learning investment shifts. Not the next Spring Boot workshop. But architecture, system design, testing strategies, distributed systems. These are the skills that will still be relevant in ten years. Independent of the framework.

Spring Boot is not obsolete. What's becoming obsolete is the notion that everyone on the team has to master the framework in detail in order to be productive with it. What matters are good engineering skills. A mental model of how software works. The ability to ask the right questions. To verify results. No matter the framework. No matter the language.
