Practice-oriented AI training for innovative work in the Rhenish mining area

Getting to know the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence and using the potential effectively - a workshop for the future.

Logo of the Rheinisches Revier Future Agency

The Zukunftsagentur Rheinisches Revier is an important player in the structural change in the region. Over the next 10 to 20 years, the landscape between Aachen, Cologne and Mönchengladbach - the Rhenish mining district - which was previously dominated by opencast lignite mining, is to become a model region in which the economy and residents will be able to get by entirely without fossil fuels, i.e. solely with renewable energies.

Another important focus is the expansion of infrastructure and the creation of new jobs in trade, SMEs and industry. The Zukunftsagentur is proactively helping with this comprehensive structural change by providing advice, information and involving all stakeholders.

The results at a glance

  • Participants learned about new tools and how they work through practical exercises with generative AI.
  • The data protection-compliant “CompanyGPT” from codecentric guaranteed transparent and secure data processing.
  • The exercises offered concrete application examples from the day-to-day work of the Zukunftsagentur Rheinisches Revier.
  • The workshop combined theory with room for discussion and clarified concerns and ethical questions about AI.
  • Participants were able to try out the tips on “prompting” directly in exercises.
  • The Reihnisches Revier team is now well equipped and optimally prepared to use AI sensibly and responsibly in their work.

Initial situation

The rapidly advancing development in the field of artificial intelligence presented the Future Agency with a clear task: to provide employees with targeted training to enable them to deal with AI safely and competently. The employees were very interested in the topic of AI, but also had a wide range of prior knowledge - some already had experience, while others were still new to the topic. It was particularly important to ensure data protection when using the new tools. Many were unsure which technologies are data protection-compliant and how to use them correctly.

In addition, employees wanted an opportunity to share experiences and best practices and get concrete application ideas for their day-to-day work. The training was intended to boost confidence in AI technologies and equip participants with the knowledge they need to use AI responsibly and efficiently.

Solution

In a one-day workshop, Dominik Fladung and Dr. Meike Wocken from codecentric introduced around 20 participants from the Zukunftsagentur to the basics of AI. The focus was on how AI works, including key concepts such as machine learning, deep learning and neural networks. The speakers also discussed risks such as bias in data and data protection issues.

The main topics of the workshop were:

  • Basics of AI: What is AI, what techniques are there, and how do strong and weak AI differ?
  • Risks: How to deal with ethical issues, what happens with biased data, and which data protection aspects are important? European regulation, the “European AI Act”, was also a topic.
  • Generative AI in practice: Participants were able to test Generative AI live with the GPT-4.0 language model and learned the best tricks for effective prompting. Thanks to tasks from their daily work, they were able to try out directly how AI can make their everyday work easier.

The practical exercises, which took place on codecentric's data protection-compliant “CompanyGPT”, were particularly valuable. The examples were closely aligned with the participants' tasks and thus offered them a practical and safe framework for experiencing AI in an application-oriented way.

Result

The intensive examination of the opportunities and challenges of AI now ensures that the participants are optimally prepared for an increasingly AI-supported working world. In addition to the technical knowledge, the participants had space to openly address their questions and uncertainties. This resulted in a deeper understanding and trust in the technology, which is very important for their everyday lives.

The conclusion of the workshop: The participants feel motivated and confident in dealing with AI and are looking forward to using the new possibilities in their everyday work. The Agency for the Future is now ideally positioned to make effective use of the potential of artificial intelligence.
