What happened at Girls'Day 2023?

This year, Girls'Day at codecentric was a whirlwind of activity: our offices in Berlin, Bielefeld, Hamburg, Karlsruhe, Solingen, and Stuttgart opened their doors and gave 8th-grade students a glimpse into the world of IT.

In Solingen, the girls attended two workshops in which they built a website using HTML and CSS and programmed a Lego robot with Scratch. Beyond the technical input, there was of course no shortage of opportunities to get to know the working environment in IT – at our headquarters, a tour of the auditorium and the codecentric apartment in the office was a must! The foosball table, pool table, fruit fridge, and arcade machine were the cherry on top.

In Bielefeld, codecentric colleague Anna was interviewed via an online call – she currently works remotely from Spain. It was exciting for the girls present to hear what that can look like in practice for a PO, and Anna was able to give them tips on how to successfully get started in IT.

In Berlin, too, our colleagues brought out the familiar Click building blocks and let the girls test how you can use them to program. More specifically, the Berlin workshops revolved around coding with Calliope. The students also got to know the Scrum method.

In Stuttgart, Girls'Day had a culinary twist. The day began with the girls attempting to program a (human) yogurt-eating robot – the students got to know algorithms through a living example!

Things continued to be exciting: using Scrum, the girls rebuilt Stuttgart's "Wilhelma" with Lego bricks within two hours and opened it to their visitors right on time at 12:00 noon. After a pizza break, the day's programme concluded with two smaller workshop groups. In the first, Snake was programmed using Processing. The second workshop focused on programming encrypted communication between MicroBits.

In Hamburg, ten girls had the opportunity to put their programming skills to the test. They too got to discover what can be programmed using Lego bricks and Scratch. Throughout the day, colleagues also gave the students some creative freedom, allowing them to develop a few games and use the MicroBit as an input device for their game.

codecentric Girls'Day – another great success

As in previous years, it was wonderful for the codecentric team to welcome so many enthusiastic young students to the offices. The atmosphere was consistently positive and the girls were engaged and enthusiastic – we look forward to the next Girls'Day in 2024!
