The new Lünendonk study "Application Modernization & Cloud Transformation" examines the current state and priorities of application modernization in companies.
The cloud has long since ceased to be a purely IT topic. More and more companies, as well as the public sector, are increasingly investing in IT modernization and the digitalization of their processes and business models. It is now increasingly the business departments that are pushing IT to move faster in adopting cloud services, in order to keep pace with rapidly changing customer and market demands. Goals such as agility, flexibility, and scalability of business processes and digital products are often at the forefront.
The historically grown and monolithic IT landscapes that still predominate in most companies are, however, often not yet designed for these new requirements and call for a complete transformation to a modern business/IT architecture.
In fact, 7 out of 10 companies have already begun cloud transformation and application modernization. However, they are pursuing partly very different strategies and approaches. While some are still primarily migrating their applications to the cloud while leaving their architecture and technology platforms intact, others are gradually rebuilding their application landscape into a cloud-native architecture. Looking ahead to 2024/2025, according to Lünendonk, around 80% of companies in German-speaking countries will place a strong investment focus on IT modernization and cloud transformation.

A Look Inside the Study
Very few companies are fully satisfied with their application landscape.
13% of companies consider their IT stack to be very well positioned to meet current business requirements; a further 77% consider it to be at least fairly well positioned.
Application modernization is a high priority
For 43% of companies, application modernization is currently a high priority. 57% of respondents currently assign a rather low priority to application modernization, which is related to the predominantly positive assessment of their own technology stack as well as the general economic climate.
Modernization yes, but certain legacy systems remain important
In the future, 70% of the surveyed companies intend to retain their existing legacy systems and maintain their IT architecture for certain areas. 67% of companies will migrate parts of their custom software solutions to standard software.
