This article contains a couple of screencasts that are part of the Continuous Delivery in the Cloud series. The screencasts show the main steps of creating your first Amazon EC2 instance, including a tomcat 6 installation. I recommend to read the introductory article on Amazon Web Services first, before you continue with the screencasts, Continuous Delivery in the Cloud – Part 2: Getting started with Amazon EC2
The first video shows the AWS dashboard. The video will guide you through the process of creating your first instance.
- login AWS management console
- configure AWS dashboard
- launch instance with Linux machine image
- configure instance type (small, medium, large, …)
- start instance
- check connection details
(right-click on the video to get it started or click on the link below to view the video in full screen mode)

Since the start of a new instance can take a couple of minutes, the video is split in two pieces. The second part shows a fully started instance in the EC2 dashboard. The status checks column should show 2/2 checks passed. Now you can get the login url from the context menu and login to the server. After the login you should update the system via the yum package manager.
- copy connection details from context menu
- login to server
- update system via package manager, sudo yum update

In the last video I am installing tomcat 6 via the yum package manager and verify in my web browser that tomcat is running. Since tomcat is running on port 8080 per default, we need to open port 8080 in the security group of the instance. If you change the settings of the security group you need to reboot the instance.
- verify port 8080 is open
- reboot instance of security group was modified
- copy connection details
- login to server
- install open jdk
- install tomcat6
- start tomcat6 service
- verify tomcat start in log file
- check tomcat instance in web browser

That’s all
